My Very Own Closet

I love my new closet. We recently renovated our house. One of the great new features is having my own closet. Previously, I shared a closet with my wife. She is very small, but, like Barbie, she has a lot of accessories. Barbie had her own house. Ken had to keep all his stuff in his car. So you can imagine the challenge in sharing a closet with my wife. I was always trying to defend my turf from the onslaught of shoes and handbags. It was difficult to defend my space with primarily T-shirts and underwear, even though I haven’t thrown any out since high school. They don’t take up enough space.

I have to fill up my new closet quickly before she grows out of hers. Already she sees it as a good landing area for joint property such as pillows or Costco-sized boxes of toothpaste and soap. I have retaliated with 15 years of Chelsea programs and all of my Sports Illustrated’s from 1968-1973. Plus three dozen Brooks Brothers white button-down shirts dating back to 1980 (they never go out of style!). Then there are my 10 pairs of unworn khaki pants with waists ranging from 34 to 40. And my 10 Frank Lampard Chelsea shirts. Several jars of pennies. Shoe boxes filled with used golf tees and ball markers. But it’s still not enough, so I am thinking about getting a Barcalounger and a big screen TV. And a lock.

Any ideas? Can you help me?

Golf Lessons

I played golf with my parents today. The familiar routine of this activity provides a certain timeless comfort, akin to eating meatloaf and mashed potatoes or watching I Love Lucy reruns. My father always shows up an hour early with a soiled and crumpled hat that has been stuffed in the trunk of his car, wearing shorts that are several sizes too big, with no piece of clothing matching another. My mother arrives carefully put together in a color-coordinated outfit from the Hillary Clinton line of golf wear. In lieu of stretching or hitting balls at the practice range, my father then warms his seat in the golf cart for the next hour waiting anxiously for his name to be called to tee off, while my mother chats with the cashier in the golf shop, or the parking valet, or the locker room attendant, or the starter, or the girl driving the snack cart, or …..

When we get to the first tee, my father parks the cart as close as he can get to the tee box, finding the optimum distance to minimize any walking while avoiding hitting it on his back swing. He has a handicapped flag that allows him to drive the cart wherever he wants. He got this flag many years ago before having most of his body parts replaced. His current body is younger than mine and virtually indestructible, but there is no way he’s giving back that handicapped flag. Once he arrives at the tee, he finally emerges from the golf cart, places his driver laterally behind his back and rotates once to the left and once to the right. That is his warm up. He then tees the ball up, smashes it with the force of Joe Frazier punching Muhammad Ali, ands sends himself into back spasm. My mother then carefully tees it up, precisely chooses her target (although not always the right one) and meticulously checks her stance, grip, posture, sun visor, watch, cell phone, stock portfolio….and ultimately smacks it right down the middle. She then records her shot on her portable shot counter. She meticulously records every shot contemporaneously so as not to forget or make mistakes. She is the only golfer in the world that doesn’t cheat. She believes that she won’t go to heaven if she doesn’t accurately count all her strokes (and there are a lot of them). If she is right, she will have no one to play with when she gets there.

As my father approaches his second shot, the golf lessons begin. Often the best teachers are not the best golfers and vice versa. This is certainly true with my mother. She is excited when she breaks 120 (which would be 100 if she cheated like the rest of us). Nevertheless, she is an expert golf instructor. As he stands over the ball, she tells him to swing easy and keep his head down. He promptly wacks at it with his Joe Frazier swing, quickly lifts his head to watch his achievement and sends it three yards. He then glares at her while she tells him that his grip was wrong. This pattern repeats itself for the next four hours. She persists in trying to fix his game, his wardrobe, his manners, his exercise regimen…..He persists in ignoring her. It’s been working perfectly for 55 years.

Boca Raton Restaurants

Here are some of my favorite restaurants in Boca Raton (with a heavy Italian-Jewish bias):

  • Flakowitz Bagel Inn, 1999 N. Federal Hwy: Huge breakfast portions, free marble cake, service for masochists;
  • Toojay’s, Polo Shops, Regency Court or Glades Plaza: New York Style deli, excellent chicken soup and rugalach;
  • Matteo’s, 233 S. Federal Hwy: Family style Italian portions for sharing, Long Island roots, world’s best baked clams;
  • Chops Lobster Bar, 101 Plaza Real South, Steak, chops and seafood with a large and varied menu, excellent fun side dishes, nice ambiance;
  • New York Prime, 2350 Executive Center Drive: My favorite of many good Boca steakhouses, the biggest baked potato I’ve ever seen, cheesy live music that I secretly love; and
  • Arturo’s, 6750 N. Federal Hwy: Timeless old-fashioned Italian that reminds me of my Grandpa, a family favorite for special occasions, great antipasto buffet.

Taking My Talents to South Beach (NBA Finals)

As a newly-minted part-time south Florida resident, I have decided to take my rooting talents to South Beach and jump on the Miami Heat bandwagon. I will not be announcing this on a nationwide prime-time television special. I’m just posting it on my blog and letting word-of-mouth do the rest. This was not an easy decision as LeBron James’ similar Decision last year engendered so much ill will that the Heat became the pariahs of the NBA everywhere outside a 150 mile radius of Miami and the phrase “taking my talents to South Beach” has taken on connotations with which I would prefer not to be associated. This is why I have chosen to forego the national TV special and take this lower key approach to my announcement.

This has also been a difficult decision because I have been a lifelong New York Knicks fan. We have had a fierce rivalry with the Miami Heat dating back to Coach Pat Riley’s move from the Knicks to the Heat in 1995 followed by several years of epic playoff confrontations in the late nineties between teams led by Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning. I am also very excited about the Knicks’ recent acquisitions of Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony and looking forward to a resurgence after many years in the NBA wilderness. So I will not be abandoning the Knicks as my first love.

Nevertheless, I recently purchased a condo in south Florida where I expect to spend a significant portion of future winters, right in the heart of the basketball season. I will need a local sports fix, so my daughter and I did some reconnaissance in March when we donned our new Heat T-shirts and went to see them play the Lakers (after a spicy buffet dinner at Gloria Estefan’s Bongos Cuban Cafe). The Heat were coming off a five-game losing streak and the Lakers were in the midst of a nine-game winning streak. But in a foreshadowing of what they would later show in the playoffs, LeBron and Dwayne Wade shut down Kobe Bryant in the fourth quarter that night and ended both streaks. They passed the test (with Bongos as a bonus). So I’m adding the Heat to my portfolio of sports teams as my second choice in the NBA and my first adopted team in south Florida.

Fortuitously, the timing of my announcement coincides with the Heat’s ascendancy to the 2011 NBA Finals. I am picking the Miami Heat to beat the Dallas Mavericks in six games with LeBron James as the MVP.
