My Younger Daughter

One of my retirement hobbies is painting. A few years ago I attended art school part-time and we studied figurative painting with live nude models (an excellent reason to attend art school even if you can’t draw). I always brought my finished projects home and proudly displayed them in the family room. When my younger daughter (not pictured here) expected her friends to come over, she took them down, bundled them up and hid them. Once, one of my friends asked her if she did this because they were paintings of nude women. She said “No, I do it because they’re shit”. I have since taken up blogging and friending all of her friends on Facebook for revenge.

Hamptons Restaurants

Ready for summer? Here are my favorite upscale restaurants in the Hamptons:

  • The Palm, 94 Main St, East Hampton: My favorite, a Hamptons tradition managed forever by Tomas Romano, world’s best veal parmigiana, share a side of half and half fried onion rings and cottage fries, great cheese cake, humongous slices of decadent chocolate cake;
  • Mirkos, Water Mill Square, Water Mill: Croatian chef, ‘adult’ ambiance (my parents’ favorite), patio dining, excellent stuffed cabbage, succotash, mushroom hash, fruit crumble, homemade fresh fruit sorbets;
  • Robert’s, 755 Montauk Highway, Water Mill: My preference for upscale Italian over the scene at Nick and Toni’s in East Hampton, creative menu with high quality ingredients in a quaint old renovated farmhouse;
  • Bobby Van’s, Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton: The heart of Bridgehampton nightlife for over 30 years, perfect for Friday night straight off the Jitney, diverse menu complements great steaks and chops, also excellent lunch salads; and
  • red bar brasserie, 210 Hampton Road, Southampton: Excellent Long Island duck and fresh fish, creative menu, charming old house, plenty of buzz.

Burgers

I ate a burger today. Actually, it was a double cheeseburger. I was alone. No one who knew me was anywhere close. I thought it was a good idea at the time. I once went 17 consecutive years during which I ate at least one hamburger a day, sometimes 3 or 4. (I am sure that some of you out there have borne witness to all or part of that streak.) Here are some of my favorite burgers. What are yours?

  • Bar Boulud London, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, London: Piggie Burger with BBQ Pulled Pork, Bibb Lettuce, Green Chili Mayonnaise, Cheddar Bun, Red Cabbage Slaw;
  • Burger Joint at Le Parker Meredien, 119 W. 56th Street, NYC: The basics, no frills, grilled to perfection;
  • Bay Burger, 1742 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike, Sag Harbor: Freshly baked homemade buns, in-house freshly ground beef, Tater Tots, homemade ice cream;
  • White Castle, a neighborhood somewhere in the Mid-Atlantic or Midwestern United States nowhere near you: 8-12 sliders with onion rings best eaten after 2am, my favorite location was in Newark, NJ in the 1980’s on my way home from work/play; and
  • Steak n’ Shake, road trip stop in the Southern or Midwestern United States: all this thinking about burgers has made me crave a shake!
